If you have made the decision to pursue your dreams, every action you take and do not take will contribute to just how close you get to accomplishing them. This is why you need to take care in everything you do, say or even think. At any moment in your life, you are either helping yourself push forward, or holding yourself back. In this post, we look at the 3 actions you can take to kill your dreams.
You probably don’t have the capital you need to start that business you always wanted. Time is probably never on your side because you work long hours and need to keep up with school. Or it could be that the people you try to work with always disappoint you.
This list can go on forever. Sooner or later, to get to where you need to be, you will have to take responsibility for the outcomes you are experiencing. This is key and it’s really a mindset shift. And personally, I call it growing up :). The truth is that a lot of the great achievers you know of today probably had it a lot worse than you have it right now and still achieved their goals.
But if you insist on blaming your circumstances for the goals you are hoping to achieve, then sit back and relax. It’s obvious that the obstacles you face have dominance over your desire to achieve success.
If your uncle who owns a restaurant, tells you that you are wasting your time with online marketing, take his advice. Listen to your friend when he suggests that you make a career change because he already did so. Trash the knowledge you acquired about farming to follow in the footsteps of your older sibling who is a highly paid vice president of a Fortune 500 company.
I’m not saying that you shouldn’t get coaching or advice. Just make sure it’s from the right people that have your best interests in mind. After all, it’s your life. Not a replica of someone else’s. Be very strategic on who you let speak to you about matters regarding success in your industry. I can’t seek advice about succeeding in the gaming industry from someone that knows very little about games in the first place.
Most successful people, even outside your industry, have the wisdom and advice you need to generally succeed. But the more you start to succeed, the more specific the advice will need to be. This is where you draw the line. There’s a significant difference between succeeding in selling fast food and selling web design services.
However, it’s no secret that some people seek the approval of others in everything they do. They want to be acknowledged by people they consider important in their lives. To the point where they are willing to be pointed in the “right” direction when it comes to career choices. By doing this, you can kill your dreams, by following theirs.
After thinking about a list of goals you would like to achieve, don’t write them down. Go kill some time on the internet. Forget coming up with an action plan with specific tasks to do. Don’t research or find out more about how you can begin taking the steps necessary to start achieving each of them.
Every action you do and every action you do not do have an impact on your journey towards success. By not being proactive in pursuing your dreams, you are immediately being proactive in killing them. Pretty harsh, I know. But this is a serious lesson. The successful people you look up to are up there for a reason, right? If becoming a success story was easy, then everyone would be one.
This honestly boils down to one very simple question: Do you want to accomplish your goals? If yes, then stop looking for ways to challenge your decision to do so. Instead, look for ways to empower it. It may sound like I’m stating the obvious, but most people don’t realize that this is the one thing that hinders their attempts to succeed.
And with that, I welcome you to share your ideas on ways we can kill our dreams or just hold ourselves back from achieving our goals.
