I have seen so many people attempt to pursue their dreams and quit right before they gain any significant progress. It’s well known that becoming a success story is no easy task. However the strength to press on and overcome the obstacles you will face, greatly depends on just how much of your heart and mind is invested into that dream. So here are 5 questions you need to ask yourself before you begin the journey towards accomplishing your dreams.
Having sleepless nights thinking about that business you need to start, is a good example. Using every moment you get to yourself during the day to think about becoming that successful farmer you always wanted to be is also another good example.
Is this something you feel like you want more than a lot of other things in your life? Is it something that you feel you truly must-have? If so, then you are on the right track. Passion and Desire must be at the forefront of dream chasing. And this desire is very specific. What is the one thing that will bring you fulfillment if you had the opportunity to do it every day? This is your calling.
Ever noticed how easily distracted you can get when working on a task that you don’t care too much about? But this doesn’t happen when you think about your one dream. When it’s time to think about your dream, you have 100% concentration. This tells you that given the opportunity to pursue your dream, you would rarely lose focus. Which is a good discipline to have. Pay attention to your calling. It will be crucial to your success.
This is a pretty good indicator of just how serious you are about accomplishing your dreams. Most people are already invested in their dreams way before they consciously decide to pursue them. Imagine sitting down with an 8-year old that tells you facts about the stars and planets that you didn’t know. And I mean really specific like the fact that Black Holes eventually evaporate.
I would immediately come to the conclusion that the 8-year-old would end up working for NASA. I mean even if that weren’t true, the fact that she has that knowledge under her fingertips says something in itself.
Take the time to understand your passion. Cultivate interest. Doing this will quickly help you discover all possible obstacles you may encounter. Also all the possible fortune you could come across. So that when you do begin to pursue your dreams, you aren’t completely clueless.
And if that doesn’t convince you, consider this: Imagine someone that doesn’t want to be what you aspire to be but knows more about that path than you do. I don’t know about you, but that’s almost heartbreaking.
This is extremely important and proves that the previous question was just as necessary. Understanding your passion was what you needed to accomplish in that question. This question is about identifying the possible steps you will need to take to actually succeed.
Let’s say that you are passionate about creating great-looking websites. And your goal is to become a successful freelance web designer. You then need to identify the steps you will need to take to become that freelancer. For instance, you need to learn how to translate client problems to web solutions.
Think beyond your passion and more about the action. Or series of actions that you think are required to take you to where you need to be. It will make it easier when you begin the journey towards the success you crave.
Gosh! This is a very personal question that requires a deep level of self-reflection. Believe me when I say that we are our greatest obstacles when it comes to trying to succeed. Something as simple as the belief we have in ourselves could turn us into world leaders or street loiterers.
This is no joke. Actually asking yourself if this is what you truly want and if you think that you are capable of achieving it, is crucial to understanding if your heart is in the right place. Think of it as if it were a relationship. How many successful relationships do you know of where the partners aren’t fully committed to the relationship? Can you seriously create a happy healthy relationship of over 30 years if you aren’t sure about whether this is what you really want in the relationship?
I’m no relationship expert so I’ll stop there. But my point is that you must believe in yourself and the dream you hold dear, before beginning your journey. Otherwise, the temptations to quit will be more than when you actually do believe. This isn’t magic. You will actually face more challenges when you have more self-doubt than when you don’t. Believing that you are capable of overcoming obstacles actually begins to remove a lot of them for you.
The answer to this question has to be a YES. If it’s a NO, then you are probably not reaching for a big enough goal. The greater the goal, the scarier it feels to stretch for it. After asking yourself the 4 questions above, it’s actually this last question that determines whether or not you’re aiming for a goal outside your comfort zone. And the success you crave lies outside your comfort zone.
Consider this: I think about cupcakes all day. In fact, I have sleepless nights over them. I know more about cupcakes than the average person. I know about the different types and I know about the ingredients used to make cupcakes. I also know what it will take to make a cupcake. I strongly believe that I can make a cupcake. But am I afraid to begin the journey of making a cupcake? NO!
Compelling goals, stretch you and are usually outside your comfort zone. Where there is fear, a success story is not too far along. This is an opportunity for you to become courageous. And someone once said that having courage isn’t the absence of fear, but it’s the willingness to keep moving despite it.
After all, this is what makes succeeding even sweeter. The fact that you overcame fear and the obstacles, makes the journey that much more satisfying.
I’m sure that one of the reasons why people don’t end up accomplishing their goals, is that they don’t ask themselves these 5 questions before embarking on their quest to become successful. There are so many dreams we can stretch for, but we need to be fully invested in them before we begin pursuing them. Our initial resolve will prepare us for whatever lies ahead that we will have to face.
