By deciding to pursue any large and significant goal, you are most likely aware of two important truths. The first is that you are going to face a lot of challenges as you work towards attaining your goal. The second is that you are going to have to make sacrifices to overcome some of those challenges.
Most beginners do not immediately have the wisdom to understand that the person who begins a pursuit is never the same person that attains the goal at the end of that pursuit.
You will find that the person who quits on their pursuit is almost always the same person who began that pursuit.
Proactively pursuing a calling, passion, or lifelong goal will almost always require one to change. If you refuse to change, the goal will remain unattainable.
But how does that work?
A simple example will make this clear to you.
Suppose you wanted to become a successful doctor. But becoming one will require that you both study and practice medicine. Now let’s say that you refuse to study or practice medicine… how likely are you to become a successful doctor?
The person who quits on the pursuit is usually the same person who began that pursuit.
Change is hard for many people. Becoming someone else is nowhere easy for some. But if you are to ever attain goals that you have never attained before… you are going to have to change what you are doing and how you are thinking. Those two things are most responsible for shaping our lives.
A simple definition of insanity is: Doing the same thing over and over again, yet expecting different results.
If you continue to do what you always do… you will continue to get what you always get.
Now…
If you understand what I’m saying, then you will no doubt understand that making significant change is going to require making sacrifices. After all, you are most likely going to have to stop doing the things that are responsible for giving you your current life.
The idea of making sacrifices may initially seem like some kind of negative course of action. However, if making a sacrifice brings you closer and NOT further from your goal… isn’t that sacrifice worth making?
We aren’t talking about strange rituals that involve slaughtering animals. We are talking about dropping habits and mindsets to adopt ones that favor you getting what you desire most.
When we do not make these important sacrifices that could bring us closer to the lives we want… we are directly sacrificing those goals for whatever we find to feel comfortable in the present moment.
Never forget that.
You and I need to continuously evaluate our lives and pinpoint those things in our lives that make it hard for us to make progress.
One of the most important resources we need in order to succeed is time. We need to dedicate a large portion of our daily lives to what matters most to us… and not others. To work on our goals. To educate ourselves so that we better serve our needs.
Our time is precious. Without focusing most of it on what we want to attain, we decrease our chances of ever attaining that which we want most.
You can never expect to become a professional designer if you only spend 5 minutes a day designing while the rest of the time is spent watching movies. You are more likely to become a movie expert than a professional designer.
Whatever you give most of your time to daily… is slowly shaping you into an expert in that area.
Never believe that you can become an expert in anything unless you invest time in it… daily.
If you want to become a professional football coach? There should be evidence of that desire in your daily life.
Do you want to become a rockstar programmer? There should be evidence of that desire in your daily life.
How about a successful business person?
I’m sure you get the idea.
Successful people aren’t built by desire alone. They are built by evidence of desire. In other words, actions. How they live. They are defined by what they do… not by what they intend to do.
And because we live in a busy world where there is a great demand on our time and attention… the most determined among us understand just how important sacrifices are. Just how important it is to say no to those time-consuming activities that do not bring us closer to the lives we want.
Will you miss going out over the weekend to work on building that life you claim you want more than anything?
Will you skip watching a TV Show marathon so that you teach yourself a skill necessary to help you get the life you claim you truly desire?
Claim?
Yes.
Evidence of desire is in action… not intention.
If you desire to change your life but continue to live it as you have always lived for the past 5 years… then the reality of the situation is that you do NOT desire to change your life. It really is that simple. Arguing otherwise will not really serve you, now will it?
I believe that you are most likely aware of the sacrifices you need to make to set yourself on the path towards the life you want. And if you are not… then you need to spend time reflecting on that life. Who and where are you? Are you happy with what you are doing and who you are?
If you are not on the path you truly wish to be on… then this will be important to you. And depending on just how deeply you feel about becoming the person you know you should be… you will most likely strengthen your resolve to act on changing your situation.
